Rio security officer dies from gunshotRIO DE JANEIRO — A police officer has died after being shot in the head when he and two others working security at the Rio Olympics got lost near a slum and encountered gunfire.Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes announced Helio Vieira’s death on his official Facebook page.The officers from Brazil’s national security force were using a GPS device to navigate unfamiliar streets Wednesday afternoon when they took a wrong turn off a highway leading to Rio’s international airport. Their truck was sprayed with bullets, and officer Helio Vieira was shot. He died late Thursday.
Small college gridder dies after practiceCHADRON, Neb. — A football player at a small college in western Nebraska has died following the team’s practice.Chadron State College officials said 20-year-old freshman Eric Goll of Haines City, Fla., was taken from the practice field to Chadron Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:30 p.m.No cause of death was announced. Chadron police and the Dawes County Attorney’s office are investigating.
A-Rod denied request to play 3rd baseBOSTON — Alex Rodriguez has been turned down in his request to play the field for his final game with the New York Yankees.Manager Joe Girardi said A-Rod wouldn’t be at third base Friday night at Yankee Stadium against Tampa Bay.Rodriguez had asked to return to his old position for the last game. He hasn’t played the field this season.The Yankees plan a pregame ceremony to recognize Rodriguez. The team announced last weekend that after the game, he will be released and then become an adviser and instructor for the club.
