Tornado bowlers take 3rd in WPIBL
Butler rolled to its best ever finish at the WPIBL boys bowling championships Wednesday night at Nesbit’s Lanes in Plum.
The Golden Tornado scored a 2,759 to finish third out of 18 teams, which is the best finish in school history, according to Butler coach Bob Cupp.
Hempfield won with a 2,956 and Norwin came in second with a 2,865.
Senior Jacob Cookson led Butler with a 570 series, while freshman Nick Huff had a 564 and senior Garrett Sexton rolled a 554.
All five starters will compete in the Western Pennsylvania singles regional next Friday and the team will compete in the team regional Saturday at the North Versailles Bowl.
HockeyNicholas Wann’s overtime goal gave the Butler hockey team more than just a 6-5 overtime win against Pittsburgh Central Catholic.It lifted the Golden Tornado to its first section title in 21 years and earned Butler the No. 3 seed in the Class AAA playoffs.The Golden Tornado (13-7) have won five straight since losing to Pine-Richland 3-1 Feb. 10.Tanner Chuba had a monster night for Butler, scoring four goals, including three in the second period. After Chuba’s three goals put the Golden Torando ahead 5-2 after two, the Vikings (11-8-1) rallied.Central Catholic scored three goals in the third period to force overtime. Troy Double finished with four points for Butler, scoring a goal and adding three assists.
