Tornado track teams take down Rams
BUTLER TWP - If Butler's track and field teams were using Wednesday's dual meet as a tuneup for this weekend's home invitational meets, they proved they are ready to sing.
The Golden Tornado boys (3-1) cruised to a 116½-33½ victory over Pine-Richland, failing to win just two events.
The Tornado girls (4-0) dominated the field events on their way to a 93-57 triumph over the Rams.
"We want to get better times, heights and distances with every meet," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "That's been a little tough the way the weather's been. When the weather gets warmer, the times will get better."
That could happen this weekend as Friday's Butler Boys Invitational and Saturday's Butler Girls Invitational are expected to take place under sunny skies and with mild temperatures.
Butler's boys swept the relays Wednesday and had double winners in Tyrell Sales (shot put, discus) and Calvin Littlejohn (high jump, triple jump).
Littlejohn did not compete in the long jump, which was won by Pine-Richland's T.J. Doaty, and has not been defeated in that event this season.
He had a triple jump of 45 feet, 2 inches Wednesday, which was nine inches short of breaking the school record, and has come within two inches of the school long jump record this year.
"I want to leave here with my name in the record books," Littlejohn said. "I think I can qualify for states in all three (jumping) events, but I'll probably just concentrate on two."
Littlejohn is headed for Valley Forge Military School next year - the same school that produced University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald - and plans to play football, basketball and run track there.
Brian Hanford set Butler's triple jump record of 45-10¾ in 1989 and Chris Ammon set the long jump mark of 22-3 in 1991.
"I don't want to jinx him, but Calvin has a shot at those records," Schontz said. "It could happen Friday, in front of the home crowd."
Doaty in the long jump and Alex Zoelle in the 200 meters were the lone winners for Pine-Richland (0-6).
Butler's girls won every field event. Sara Rehm won the long jump, triple jump and javelin, while Tara Maxwell won the discus and shot put. Sarah Thiebaud claimed the high jump and Kendall Butch the pole vault.
"We're getting consistent performances from Tara and Sara Rehm had an excellent meet," Butler girls coach Rod Harris said. "Kendall Butch is only a sophomore and she's becoming a powerhouse for us in field events."
Jessica Tomsey won the 800 and 1,600 meters for the Tornado. She ran the 1,600 for the first time Wednesday.
"That was impressive," Harris said. "Now we know that's another event we can call on Jessica for if we need her."
Kellayh Simmons won the 100 and 200 meters for Pine-Richland (2-4).
Field events for the 36-team Butler Boys Invitational begin at 3 p.m. Friday, while track events start at 3:30 p.m. The finals are slated for 6:30 p.m.
Knoch, Moniteau, Karns City and Seneca Valley are other Butler County schools scheduled to compete. Butler won its own invitational from 1998-2001, but Baldwin and Mt. Lebanon have won it the past two years.
Field events for the 21-team Butler girls Invitational are slated for 9 a.m. Saturday, with track events starting at 9:30 a.m. The finals will begin at about noon.
Seneca Valley and Knoch will have their squads at the meet. This is the third annual Butler Girls Invitational, with Erie McDowell and North Allegheny winning the first two years.
The Butler Boys Invitational is in its 40th year.
