Drought ends
FOX CHAPEL — Derry players scrambled, scratched and clawed, but there was no escaping the web of Mars' zone defense.
The Planets' relentless effort forced the Trojans into 27 turnovers as Mars never trailed in a 66-41 victory in a WPIAL Class AAA girls basketball first-round playoff game Thursday night at Fox Chapel High School.
It is Mars' first postseason victory in six seasons.
“Our 1-2-2 zone creates so much havoc with Lauren (Wasylson) at the top. She's just everywhere,” said Planet coach Dana Petruska. “It's what I was thinking about doing before the season and I pulled Lauren aside and told her that the only way it would work was if she played a certain way.”
Mars (18-5) will face Section 2 champion Ambridge, a 56-46 winner over Keystone Oaks, in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
The Planets opened the game with a 9-0 run, with Derry missing all five of their field goal attempts and committing five turnovers in the first 4:30 of play.
Junior guard Lauren Felix tallied the Trojans' first eight points. Wasylson countered with 13 of her 22 points in the first half as the Planets led 30-17 at the break.
Three of Derry's starters stand at least 5-foot-9 and that concerned Petruska entering the game.
“I knew Derry was big inside,” she said. “Usually, the strong side at the bottom of our zone is wide open and I thought Derry could hurt us with the high-low.”
The Trojans (13-10) did have their chances, but the team missed a lot of shots in the paint and was a dreadful 3-of-17 from the free throw line, including missing their first 10 attempts. Derry did not make a free throw until the fourth period.
“We were not a good free-throw shooting team during the season, made about 60 percent,” said Derry coach Rich Zemba. “Mars is a very good, up-tempo team and we just had too many turnovers in the backcourt.”
Trailing by 13 points, Derry opened up the second half with two quick baskets from Morgan Kelly and Felix to cut Mars' lead to 30-21. But the Planets slammed the door on the Trojan season with a 16-0 run.
The onslaught was spearheaded by Nicole McCloud, who dropped nine of her 15 points in the third quarter.
“We were down at halftime in a lot of our section games this year,” said Zemba, who coached the Trojans to the Section 3 title with an 11-1 record. “But we would come out and go on a run that put us up. That just didn't happen tonight.”
Tai Johnson scored 17 points for Mars. Felix scored 22 points for Derry, more than half of the team's total.
