Rough night for Planets

Mars hockey loses conference title with 3-2 loss to Moon

WARRENDALE — Crashing sticks. Slamming locker room door. Bellows of anger. Long faces. Disappointed faces.

It was not a good night for the Mars hockey team.

In fact, the Planets suffered a triple whammy.

They lost on Senior Night to Moon, 3-2. They also lost the PIHL Class AA Western Conference title in the process and the door to their locker room at the Baierl Ice Complex broke, locking them in and necessitating an exit through the back door.

Mars coach Steve Meyers was unavailable for comment.

But Moon coach Scott Kubatka was and he lauded the resiliency of his team after falling behind by a goal early and then giving up a goal that put the Planets up 2-1 with just 13 seconds remaining in the second period.

That score stood until 3:51 remaining in the third period when Logan Rosser scored from the blue line.

Rosser scored again less than two minutes later on nearly the same shot from the same spot on the ice for the game-winner.

“It was a character win for us, especially going down 2-1 there and especially when you give up a goal late in the second,” Kubatka said. “We thought we had the better part of the play in the second period and the second half of the first, and that could deflate a group.

“But these kids didn’t let it affect them,” the coach added. “They shook it off between periods, got off to a little bit of a slow start in the third period, but they were determined and they pulled it out.”

The game was for the Western Conference championship in Class AA.

Moon (15-5-2) also beat Mars (15-5-2) by a 3-2 score in November.

Mars started off slowly and was out-shot 18-9 after two periods, but still held that 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of goals from Keaton Hanna.

Mars dominated play to start the third period after getting off just two shots on goal in the second period, but couldn’t find the net.

Moon also struggled to score as Mars goalie Tyler Spreng made several difficult saves.

Spreng stopped 22 shots in the game.

Moon has had difficulty at times scoring, Kubatka said.

“We know we have to earn everything we get,” Kubatka said. “Those two goals in the third period was us battling in front of the net to make this harder on their goaltender. We know game in and game out, things aren’t going to come easily for us offensively.”

The disappointment deepened for Mars because it had a chance to win the conference title on their home ice on senior night.

Instead it was Moon that celebrated.

It was a long time coming for the Tigers, Kubatka said.

“That’s the biggest win Moon hockey has had in a very long time,” Kubatka said. “It’s our first conference championship since 2006-2007 and it couldn’t have happened to a better group of kids.”
