Tiebreaker send Seneca girls track team to WPIAL finals
CORAOPOLIS - One more point.
That's all coach Wayne Roccia said his Seneca Valley girls track team needed to win after Wednesday's WPIAL Class AAA team semifinal meet.
As it turned out, he got four.
On the bus ride home, Roccia and his coaching staff discovered an error in the final tally of the meet against Thomas Jefferson.
Four more points should have been added to the Raiders' total, which gave them a combined 251 points in their three meets.
That was the tiebreaker Seneca Valley needed to advance to next Wednesday's WPIAL championships.
The Raiders defeated Thomas Jefferson 99-51 and Penn Hills 77-73 but lost a tiebreaker to Moon, 75-75.
That left Seneca Valley, Moon and Penn Hills with identical 2-1 records in the meet
The first tiebreaker was combined team points, and Seneca Valley actually finished with 251 to Penn Hills' 247.
"Obviously we're elated. The girls are extremely excited," said Roccia. "This is what we've been telling the girls for years."
The Raiders haven't qualified for the WPIAL playoffs in a decade as Butler and North Allegheny have had a stranglehold on the section's two playoff berths.
"We're in a very tough section, and if we ever got out of the section and into the playoffs, we'd finally get a chance to show the fact that we have a nice team," Roccia said. "This verifies that."
Oddly enough, the only two events the Raiders won outright were the 3,200-meter relay (10 minutes, 21.7 seconds) and the long jump, which freshman JaLynn Mills captured with a leap of 5 feet, 5 inches.
"Her best jump had been 4-10 and she hit 5-5," said Roccia. "We're very excited.
"Hey, going in, we said to just compete and do your best, and they competed like champions.
"I'm sure Moon and Penn Hills said the same thing, but we came in as a No. 2 seed. There were a couple of No. 1 seeds here," Roccia added.
Carrie Wack re-wrote the Raiders' record book in the 100 (12.2) and 200 (25.5). She tied Janet Wilk's 1977 record in the 100 and broke the 200 mark, which had been held by Lynnette McBride (25.7 in 1985).
Much of the Raiders' success in this meet came from many of the second- and third-place finishes, which proved to be a big help against Penn Hills and Moon.
"We had athletes like Susan Fletcher, Carrie Wack and Ashlee Zinkhann doing those extra events to get extra points," said Roccia.
"We finally have Brittany Cully back (from injuries) and that's made an impact, a real positive for us," he added.
The other scores from the meet were Penn Hills 81, Moon 69; Penn Hills 94, Thomas Jefferson 56; Moon 94, Thomas Jefferson 56;
The Raiders will face North Allegheny, Canon-McMillan and Latrobe next Wednesday for the WPIAL championship at a site to be determined.
