SV boys find edge in field events

JEFFERSON TWP - On the track, the Knoch boys track and field squad proved a formidable challenge for Seneca Valley.

But the Knights couldn't overcome the Raiders' dominance in the field events.

SV (3-2, 1-2) claimed seven of the nine scoring spots in the three throwing events and won the pole vault and the high jump in an 87-63 section win over Knoch Thursday.

The Raiders also prevailed in the girls competition, 112-38.

"We knew it was going to be a close meet," said SV coach Wayne Roccia of the boys competition. "There were a lot of track events that could've gone either way, but we did so well in the field events and that's what made the difference today."

Picking up wins for the Raiders in the field were Walt Pittenger in the shot put (40 feet, 2 inches), Carson Dawkins in the discus (127-1), Ben Lees in the javelin (141-4), Justin Nock in the high jump (6-2) and Ben Mitro in the pole vault (11-0).

"That's our weakness right now, field events," said Knoch boys coach Wess Brahler. "We just ran into a numbers game. Seneca Valley brought three bus loads of kids and they just kept throwing fresh bodies at us."

Knoch outscored Seneca Valley in track events, 46-41.

Two of the more entertaining events of the day involved Knoch's Matt Friday and Seneca Valley's Chris Eden.

In the third boys event, Friday edged Eden by one-hundredth of a second in the 100-meter dash (11.49 seconds to 11.50).

Later in the meet, Eden avenged the defeat by beating Monday to the finish line in the 200 dash (23.70 to 23.73).

Knoch's 1,600-relay quartet of Eric Nebel, Dave Rickard, Ryan Hollihan and Kory Bottles won with a time of 3:39, a half second in front of the Raiders.

Bottles also won the long jump (19½) and the triple jump (40-6).

Artie Black paced the field in the 1,600 (4:48) and 3,200 (10:25) for the Knights, who dropped to 1-2 in section action.

Dan Dickey was a double winner for the Raiders (5-0, 3-0), taking the 110 high hurdles (16.8) and the 300 hurdles (42.9).

Though the Raiders dominated the girls meet, Knoch senior Sarah Reppermund provided a couple of bright spots by winning the high jump (5-0) and the pole vault (10-9).

With the latter mark, Reppermund broke her own school record of 10 feet.

"What a performance, and it's pretty early in the season too," said Knoch girls coach Tom Hoffmann. "We're just waiting to see where she takes it from here."

The only other event the Knoch girls (0-3) claimed was the discus, with Sarah Cooper's mark of 88 feet topping the field.

Double winners for the Raiders in individual events included DaLynn Mills (100 dash, long jump), Kim Chapman (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Emily Wolfarth (1,600, 800).
