Butler sweeps Seneca
JACKSON TWP - There was a lot riding on Monday's Butler-Seneca Valley girls track and field meet.
Both squads entered the day with 5-0 section records. A win would give the Raiders an upper hand in its quest for the section title since they already defeated North Allegheny two weeks ago.
The same would go for Butler, who still has a date against North Allegheny next Tuesday.
For track fans, the meet did not disappoint.
The Tornado grabbed first and second place in the final two contested events to come away with a 79-71 victory.
In the boys meet, Butler won 15 of 18 events on its way to a 110-40 victory.
"I told the girls this was the meet of all meets," said Butler coach Rod Harris. "Obviously it was. One little turn of events and it changes the meet around."
Seneca Valley led 64-63 with three events remaining: the 1,600-meter relay, high jump and shot put.
The Raiders set a school record of 4 minutes, 4.45 seconds in the relay, but Butler's Kendall Butch and Sarah Thiebaud finished 1-2 in the high jump and the Tornado's Amy Achesinski and Tara Maxwell went 1-2 in the shot put.
"It's a team. You have to do everything in those 18 events," said Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia. "To say it came down to one event wouldn't be right.
"We knew we matched up in the high jump. They had two good high jumpers and we had two good high jumpers. On any given day, it could have been the reverse. Today it was their day," Roccia added.
Freshman Amanda Malecky helped spearhead the Tornado effort, winning the 400, 800 and was part of the winning 3,200-relay team. She also anchored the 1,600 relay that just came up short.
"We asked for four events from her and she came through," said Harris. "To handle that as a freshman, especially distance running, that's asking a lot. She refuses to lose,"
Butch also was a double individual winner for Butler, winning the pole vault. Jessica Vernon won the 3,200 which Harris called a key win.
Seneca Valley's Carrie Wack won the 100, 200 and was part of the winning 400- and 1,600-relay teams. Kim Chapman won both hurdles events and was a member of the 1,600-relay team for the Raiders (5-1 in section).
"Carrie was a part of four first-place finishes and that was huge," said Roccia. "Jen Boyd had a nice jump in the long jump and (Anastasia Williams) took third in the shot put but had an outstanding throw (34-1).
"Emily Wolfarth had a gutsy race (in the 1,600, edging Vernon by less than one second). That was a huge race for her too," Roccia added.
Butler win against North Allegheny will give the Tornado the section title and Seneca will get the second and final team playoff spot out of the section, provided the Raiders knock off Pine-Richland April 27.
A win by the Tigers and an SV victory will force a three-way tie and all three teams would advance to the team playoffs.
In the boys meet, Butler's Doug Moran, James Rogerson and John Strutt each won two events while Strutt and Rogerson were part of the winning 3,200-relay team.
"We had guys really step up," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "Our guys did a great job. We're getting better and healthier."
The Raiders' wins came from Justin Nock (high jump), Dan Dickey (300 hurdles) and 1,600 relay.
A win by the Butler boys (6-0) against North Allegheny next Tuesday will give the Tornado the section title.
