Medal-worthy efforts
BUTLER TWP - Matt Schandelmeier did what he wanted to do at the Butler Boys Track and Field Invitational Friday.
He just would have loved to have done it better.
Schandelmeier, a junior at Moniteau High, earned medals in all three throwing events at the 41st annual event at Butler High
He placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 167 feet, 8 inches, fifth in the shot put (48-4) and seventh in the discus (130-11).
"I just want to come in and place in all three," said Schandelmeier. "I was pleased with the javelin, but not the discus and shot."
Schandelmeier set a season-best mark in the javelin and enjoyed a bit of a tailwind.
"I wasn't really sure what to expect with the weather and stuff, but I knew the competition would push me," he said.
"He also anchored on sprint relay," said Moniteau coach Mark Kosick. "He's had a pretty good meet."
The top placewinner of the evening from Butler County schools was Butler's John Strutt, who placed second in the 800 (2:02.3) behind North Allegheny's Max Brown (2:00.0).
"At the beginning of the second lap, John got bumped and almost stopped," said Butler coach Rick Schontz. "He'll get a rematch against Max on Tuesday (during the section meet at Butler)."
Strutt also anchored the 3,200 relay to a runner-up finish (8:14.7) behind Central Catholic (8:12.7). He was joined by Chris Henry, Josh Cable and James Rogerson.
The time was the best of the year for that relay.
Butler had a pair of third-place finishers in Junior Dunn in the javelin (186-2) and Ryan Banner in the long jump (20-8).
"Ryan's been banged up the past couple of weeks, but he jumped great and finished third," said Schontz. "Any time you place in the top three at this meet, that's great."
Also in third place were Seneca Valley's Justin Nock in the high jump (6-0), Knoch's Artie Black in the 3,200 (9:59.2) and Karns City's Mark Ferguson in the 300 hurdles (40.6).
"I was hoping to get a medal," said Black, a junior whose previous best this year was 10:08. "I was hoping to get under 10 minutes this year. That was definitely a goal."
Another goal is the school record of 9:39, which is held by Kevin Doyle.
"Hopefully, 9:40 is next," Black added.
"Artie's been waiting to break the 10-minute barrier for two years," said Knoch coach Wess Brahler. "This should give him the confidence for WPIALs.
"You run that in under 10 minutes, that's a big thing these days. Now we have to talk about what to do now," Brahler added.
The Warriors had two more fifth-place finishes with Vance Farren in the 110 hurdles (15.3) and the 1,600-relay team (3:39.1). The team won the first heat and its time was good enough to displace a couple of faster-heat participants.
Butler's Brian McCandless (high jump, 5-10) and James Rogerson (3,200, 10:04.0) also placed fifth while Moniteau's Zack Thompson (300 hurdles, 41. And Ryan Protzman (shot put, 47-11) placed sixth.
Also medaling in seventh place was Seneca Valley's Dan Stanley in the 400 (53.2) and Butler's 400-relay team (45.3).
Stanley was the winner of the second-fastest heat and his time was good enough to get the seventh spot.
As for Butler's relay team of Zach Jones, Jason Fair, Adam Monday, Matt Saeler, Schontz has seen the progress the team is making.
"We have a bunch of young kids," said Schontz. "They finally won the race in a dual meet and they did a nice job for us."
Notes:
The 100-meter run was the only record that fell Friday. Tommie Campbell of Aliquippa, a Pitt football recruit, was clocked at 10.7. … Upper St. Clair won the invitational with 66 points while Penn Hills was second 57. Butler was fifth with 35 points and Moniteau was 12th with 18.
