Tigers rule on track NA teams sweep Tornado

BUTLER TWP - It was put up or shut up time Tuesday for the North Allegheny girls track and field team.

And the Tigers put up an 82-59 victory over Butler, putting themselves in the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs and denying the Golden Tornado sole possession of the section title.

"All the credit goes to them," Butler girls coach Rod Harris said. "They came in here prepared, knew what they had to do and got the job done."

North Allegheny's boys claimed the section title by knocking Butler (6-1 in section) from the unbeaten ranks, 100-50.

No team has scored more than 50 points against the Tigers (7-0 in section meets) in a dual meet all season.

"Our boys are as cohesive a track team as I've ever been around," North Allegheny coach John Neff said. "I think we're the team to beat in the WPIAL, I really do."

The victory by NA's girls means that three teams - Butler, NA and Seneca Valley - share the section title with 6-1 records. All three will be in the WPIAL team playoffs, which begin next Wednesday.

"When we lost to Seneca Valley, we were missing a lot of people and a lot of girls ran just one event," Neff said. "Plus, we underestimated Seneca Valley. They have a very good team, as does Butler.

"Both will be dangerous in the playoffs. But we feel like we have something to prove here today."

Kelly Langhans was the Tigers' lone double-winner Tuesday, claiming the 100 and 400 meters. But NA swept the relay events.

Lindsay Schmeidl, Michelle Sauer, Michelle Diez and Marissa Butler ran the Tigers' 3,200 relay that won the first event of the day.

"Those relays were huge for them," Harris admitted. "They turned the meet. They ran the 4x4 in 4:03. If you can do that, you deserve to win."

"Winning the 4x8 in a dual meet is critical," Neff said. "You gain momentum right away and everybody's excited. If you lose, everybody's head drops a bit."

Butler's Tara Maxwell won the shot put and discus while teammate Kendall Butch won the high jump and triple jump.

"Kendall hit 5-6 in the high jump, which was impressive," Harris said. "Tara reached 36-8 in the shot put, so she's getting back to where she wants to be."

Sarah Thiebaud finished second in the long jump for Butler but injured an ankle and couldn't compete in the triple jump. Her status for next week is unknown.

On the boys side, Max Brown and Dan Boada won three events each for the Tigers.

"That Brown is the real deal," Butler boys coach Rick Schontz said. "That kid is outstanding."

The Tornado's John Strutt finished second to Boada in the 400 and second to Brown in the 800, despite feeling under the weather.

"Two or three of these races were close, where we just got nipped at the finish line," Schontz said. "The 400 was one of those.

"But North Allegheny probably has the best pole vault team in the state. Their shot-putters are excellent. … You have to give them their due."

The Tigers' Andrew McMillen won the shot put and discus with room to spare Tuesday. His discus throw was 16 feet farther than second place and his shot put with six feet farther than the second best.

Schontz said he hopes to get three injured boys back in time for the WPIAL playoffs: shot putter Nolan Brink and sprinters Luke Renwick and Mike Golic.

"We had a lot of young kids running out there today," Schontz said. "We need to get a little healthy. We'll be OK."
