Balance keys KC girls' 77-45 victory

Four Karns City girls basketball players — LeeAnn Gibson (19 points), Alyssa Gibson (13), Shanel Preston (12) and Annie Hegedus (11) — scored in double figures to help the Gremlins defeat A-C Valley 77-45 in a KSAC South Division matchup Saturday in Foxburg.

Karns City (13-4, 5-1) led 41-20 at halftime. Danielle Kaufman led the Falcons (10-7, 2-5) with 12 points.

Hopewell 53, Slippery Rock 50 — Jenna Whitmer (16 points) and Elena McDermott (11) scored in double figures, but the Rockets (9-7) lost a non-section game.

Slippery Rock outscored the Vikings 21-9 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Track and field

Emily Horstman led the Butler girls track and field team at the Tri-States Coaches Indoor meet at Edinboro University by placing second in the 200-meter dash in 26.72 seconds.

Horstman anchored the Golden Tornado to a fifth-place finish in the 4x200 meter relay along with Savannah miller, Jessica Bishop and Adrianna McGarrah. The girls distance medley relay — consisting of Emma LeMay, Madison Tonini, Kelly Kabay and Erin LeMay — finished in fourth place.

Other place winners for Butler included: 4x400 meter relay (Hanna Sheaffer, Tonini, Kabar, Horstman), seventh place; Shelby Campbell, shot put, eight place; McGarrah, long jump, eighth place.

Kent State University Invitational — Slippery Rock’s Megan Stephen ran the 60 meter sprint in 8.07 seconds to reset her own school record and finish in 10th place.

Andrew Maxwell placed 6th in the 3,2000 meters, finishing in 10:18.78. Fred Urbaniak finished seven in the hurdles with a time of 8.88 seconds.

Private schools

The First Baptist Christian School varsity girls defeated Cheswick Christian Academy 49-14.

Hannah Roth led FBCS with 22 points and eight rebounds. Lydia Roth had 14 points, seven rebounds and seven steals, while Casey Hall added 10 rebounds.

Cheswick Christian Academy 61, First Baptist Christian School 35 (boys) — Javier Inglesia scored 27 points and had seven steals in the FBC loss. The boys junior varsity team lost to Cheswick Christian Academy 42-28. Aaron Drake and Judah Roth both scored 12 poitns for FBC.
