Cameron next up for Minto

Brian Minto wasn’t home for very long.

Two days after returning to Butler after losing a unanimous decision to Michael Sprott in their second bout of the Prizefighter Tournament in London, Minto boarded a plane to New Zealand.

The 38-year-old Butler heavyweight will take on Shane Cameron, 36, of Auckland, New Zealand for the vacant WBO Oriental Pacific title Saturday night.

“That deal came together so fast,” said Pat Nelson, Minto’s manager. “They said the fight was Brian’s if he could get over there to help promote it.

“He’s been in New Zealand for three weeks now.”

Minto said after returning from London that he was physically prepared for a quick turnaround, should an opportunity arise.

Minto (38-7, 24 KO’s) fought in the Prizefighter event Nov. 14, was unhurt and boxed only six rounds. Cameron (29-3, 22 KO’s) has not fought since November of last year.

All three of Cameron’s losses have been in title fights. His last bout was a 12-round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Danny Green (32-5) for the IBO cruiserweight title.

Cameron was knocked down twice in the first round before getting knocked out in the second round by David Tua (49-3) in their WBO Oriental heavyweight title bout in October of 2009.

Cameron’s first loss was a TKO in the 12th round against Friday Ahunanya (22-5) for the WBO Asia Pacific heavyweight title in 2007.

Since losing to Tua, Cameron reeled off six straight wins before the loss to Green.

“Minto and Cameron are similar size fighters with similar styles,” Nelson said. “It should be an interesting match.

“The winner gets a top 15 world ranking in the WBO. It was short notice, but it was something we couldn’t pass up.”
