Crews from numerous departments are working at the scene of an accident on Autumn Hill Drive in Cranberry Township. Emergency dispatchers reported entrapment at the accident at 12:24 p.m. Thursday.

CRANBERRY TWP — Two people were transported to area hospitals, one in serious condition, after a single-vehicle accident Thursday.

At about 12:25 p.m. emergency crews responded to 212 Autumn Hill Drive, for a vehicle accident with entrapment. A Toyota Solara with four passengers appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed through the neighborhood, according to Cranberry police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino, who was first on the scene. The driver lost control, hitting a tree in the front yard of a home.

He said the impact caused the passenger door to be caved in and crews used the Jaws of Life, cutting tools, saws and rams to bend the metal away from that passenger. The extraction took about 45 minutes as crews removed the roof of the vehicle. The passenger, who was not immediately identified, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian in serious condition.

A second passenger was taken to Allegheny General Hospital. A third passenger refused to be evaluated, and the driver was taken to UPMC Passavant for evaluation, though he did not report injuries, Mascellino said.

Mascellino said witnesses reported seeing the vehicle traveling at about 50 mph in the neighborhood, which has a 25 mph speed limit. Signs promoting the police department's “Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25” program are scattered throughout the development.

“Luckily no kids were out,” Mascellino said. “The speeds that they were going, if there would have been a young child in the street, especially on a cul-de-sac street, it could have been very tragic. This is bad, but it could have been tragic.”

Crews from Cranberry Township police, fire and EMS were assisted by units from Marshall Township and Harmony. Neighbors and bystanders in the area were seen passing out cold water to crews as they worked at the scene in the 80-degree heat.
