2 plead guilty in robbery case
Two of four men charged with robbing another person at gunpoint in Slippery Rock Township pleaded guilty to several charges in Butler County Court on Monday.
Calvert W. Anderson Jr., 25, of Johnstown and Robert J. Brown, 23, of Pittsburgh pleaded guilty to several charges in two cases, including misdemeanor conspiracy to theft, simple assault and possession of a controlled substance before county Judge William Shaffer.
The plea agreements for both men call for sentences of probation, restitution, fines and costs. Both are scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 24.
Anderson and Brown were charged alongside two other people — Julian Durden, 23, and Quatrell Jones, 25 — with allegedly robbing Kessel Weber on Nov. 19, 2015, in his apartment at The Grove in Slippery Rock Township — stealing money, loose change, a cell phone and marijuana.
All four, who were Slippery Rock University students at the time, were charged by Pennsylvania State Police with felony counts of burglary, robbery, conspiracy and theft by unlawful taking, and misdemeanor counts of simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.
About 2 p.m. on that date several males allegedly broke into a first-floor apartment in Building 11 at The Grove at 145 Harmony Road, according to police. Weber and a friend were held at gunpoint while the men allegedly stole cash, a cell phone and other items from the apartment.
Police said Weber knew the men who robbed him and identified Durden and Anderson. Durden and Anderson were on the SRU football team and were immediately dismissed as a result of the charges, while all four were banned from campus following their arrests.
Both Anderson and Brown admitted their involvement in court on Monday.
The four men also were charged with drug charges stemming from items confiscated by police when searching their shared apartment in Slippery Rock Township.
Following a search of the suspects' apartment in the Heights apartment complex on Grove City Road, Jones and Durden each were charged with a count of felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, as well as misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.According to the criminal complaint police found in the apartment two bags of marijuana in a duffel bag with Durden's name on it and five plastic bags containing marijuana in a backpack with Jones' social security card in it.Anderson and Brown also were charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia as a result of the search warrant.Several handguns also were found, police said.All four were arraigned and held in Butler County Prison on $110,000 bail each, which was later reduced to unsecured, and all four were released.Jones and Durden currently await further court action.
