Freeport surprises Uniontown on road
Riding a three-game losing streak late in the regular season, Freeport’s boys basketball team has righted itself rather quickly.
The Yellowjackets (13-9) scored a three-point win over rival Knoch to close the regular campaign. Freeport then surprised host Uniontown, 56-49, in a first-round WPIAL Class 4A playoff game Friday night.
Freeport trailed by six points at halftime and by two through three quarters. The Yellowjackets outscored Uniontown 18-9 in the final eight minutes.
The Red Raiders’ (14-9) 49 points marked their second-lowest total of the season. They dropped a 71-38 decision to Laurel Highlands to close the regular season.
Freeport travels to Belle Vernon (18-3) for a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
North Catholic 57, Central Valley 42 — The Trojans (18-3) dropped their final two regular season games, but bounced back well in their WPIAL 4A playoff opener at home. Central Valley (10-9) was limited to five points in the first quarter.
Andrew Maddalon scored 22 points and Max Hurray 20 for North Catholic, which hosts Lincoln Park, a 90-38 winner over Yough, in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Bronwyn McCoy scored 15 points as Slippery Rock defeated Hickory, 43-26, in a Thursday night game.
Katie Book added 11 points for the Rockets, who outscored Hickory 13-4 in the third quarter to break the game open. Slippery Rock led 17-13 at halftime.
