Rocket soccer falls to Prep, 2-1

Coming into the season, Slippery Rock High boys soccer coach Kyle Hopkins was unsure what to expect from his young team.

What he did receive in many ways exceeded his expectations.

The Rockets reached the District 10 Class AA semifinals against Mercyhurst Prep, but a late goal by the Lakers ended Slippery Rock’s season, 2-1, in Erie Wednesday night.

“Coming in to the year, I knew we had a lot to replace from last year,” Hopkins said. “I told the guys they should be proud. They won the region title and won 16 games. There’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Chase Baxa put Slippery Rock ahead 1-0, but Mercyhurst Prep scored to tie it 1-1 at the half.

The Lakers got the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining and will move on to play Harbor Creek in the championship game Saturday.

Meanwhile, Slippery Rock has a solid core returning next year for another run.

“You never as a coach want to look too far ahead,” Hopkins said. “But we have four seniors and we had a lot of younger guys who saw lots of action.”
