KC girls bow in KSAC semifinal

CLARION — Points don’t come easily against North Clarion’s girls basketball team.

For Karns City, they didn’t come at all in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

The Wolves outscored the Gremlins 10-0 in the final eight minutes, pulling away for a 33-22 victory in a KSAC semifinal at Clarion University’s Tippin Gymnasium.

It is the 12th time this season North Clarion has held an opponent under 30 points, including a 39-25 win over KC three weeks ago.

“We tried to get the ball inside tonight,” said Gremlin coach Steve Andreassi, “but with their height and ball-hawking ability, it’s tough.”

KC (13-9) received a spark from freshman guard Cameryn Booher late in the third quarter. Her two baskets, including a trey, pulled the Gremlins to within 23-22 with one quarter left.

But the final period was full of frustration - 0 of 7 from the field and seven turnovers.

“We talk about it every game. Our goal is to limit teams to one shot,” said NC coach Terry Dreihaup.

But the Wolves were unable to expand their slim lead until Claire Kriebel drained a 3-pointer with 4:35 left in the game, making it 26-22.

For the game, the Wolves shot 36 percent (12 of 33) from the field in winning their 10th straight contest.

“Their zone gave us fits,” said Dreihaup of the Gremlins, “but our zone played well, too. It was a battle to see who could get the ball in the hoop.”

Emma McFarland scored 11 points for the Wolves (19-3) and Gwen Siegel added 10.

KC was eight of 30 shooting from the field.

“We just couldn’t finish,” said Andreassi. “And I’d bet we took five or six wild shots. You have to play off of two feet.”

Booher tallied eight points to pace the Gremlins, who were making their first appearance at the renovated gym here. They plan a return trip in the upcoming District 9 playoffs.

“This was bonus time for us tonight and it was a good experience,” Andreassi said. “It gave us a feel for what it’s like to play here.”
