Cleanup of damage caused by the flash flooding in Butler's West End continued throughout Thursday.

Tammy McLaughlin, who rents an apartment at 502 W. Jefferson St., was among those hardest hit.

She could not stop the water from entering her first-floor apartment.

“It went the whole way through,” McLaughlin said.

Mud was tracked throughout her rooms all the way back into her bathroom.

“We were almost waist deep in it,” McLaughlin said.

Josh Campbell, who lives at 427 W. New Castle, moved his vehicles up the street to prevent damage.

Campbell said the water rose four feet in his basement.

“Now, we get to deal with the damage,” he said.

Campbell said the dryer and the furnace may be affected.

He and his family stayed in a hotel Wednesday night.

Missy Whittington — who moved onto Mitchell Avenue last November — also has a flooded basement. Her washer was floating in the water.

In addition to dealing with the issues in the house, Whittington saw the effect the flooding had on the street.

“Cars floating,” she said. “It was really bad.”

Robert and Chelsea Saul, who recently moved to 403 Mitchell Ave., lost numerous belongings stored in their basement.

Robert Saul said many of their possessions were in the basement because they were painting the house's interior.

The couple saw the flooding along the street.

“A car floated down the street,” Chelsea Saul said. Their yard also was affected.

“I don't know where half of my garbage is,” Robert Saul said.

The Sauls' home was the border for the flooding.

“We were the last house underwater,” Chelsea Saul said.

Businesses also were heavily involved with the cleanup.

Cameron Jones of Chicora was at Bill & Di's Garage on New Castle Street at 7:30 a.m. to help open up the business.

“We did not know it happened,” he said.

Cameron and his grandfather, the owner, opened the door to find an unpleasant surprise.

“There was about three inches of mud and a foot of water,” Cameron said.

He said some tools were ruined and water seeped inside the vehicles parked outside.

The garage was closed Thursday.
