SLIPPERY ROCK — Essentials of Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation, a two-hour workshop, will be offered May 2 by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture.

The course will be from 10 a.m. to noon at Wild Roses Farm & Mushroom Co., 185 Turk Road.

Jesse Allen of Wild Roses will give a tour of his property and discuss his methods. There will be hands-on practice inoculating logs, and the opportunity for participants to take home a shiitake log for home cultivation.

Discussion will cover the details of how to select logs, including forest stewardship and what kind of trees to use, how to plug the spores, and good growing practices.

The cost of the workshop is $25 for PASA members and $30 for nonmembers.
