Mars graduate turns song into Steelers anthem
Since the start of the 2010 football season, Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” tune has been sweeping Steelers Nation. Between that and the Steelers upcoming appearance in Super Bowl XLV in Dallas, Mars graduate Marshall Hutchison couldn’t think of a better time to create a Steelers anthem.
His song “Black and Gold,” a parody of Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow,” was produced after the Steelers victory Jan. 23 in the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets. His lyrics, much “in tune” with those in Khalifa’s version, are slightly changed to fit the team, and he included more hard and old school flows along with the guitar.
“I wanted to take this song that Steelers Nation has caught onto and make it about and for the Steelers,” said Hutchison, 21, who is studying nursing at Duquesne University. “And whenever Pittsburgh won against the Jets, I figured it’s now or never.”
After creating the lyrics and practicing the track for the next couple days, Hutchison posted it on YouTube, where it received 5,000 hits. Most surprising to Hutchison is that it was such a hit even though he lacked professional recording equipment.
“I recorded it using a crummy computer microphone and free editing software,” Hutchison said. “A friend of mine let me use his Gibson Les Paul and Fender amp for the guitar solo. I was pressed on time and after hearing it, I knew I could have made it better, but that’s just the musician in me.”
Hutchison not only writes rap music, he also has created some acoustic and country tunes. Looking up to Kid Rock as a musician and songwriter and appreciating how dynamic the popular musician is, Hutchison wants to play every genre of music and appeal to all music lovers across our nation.
Will his “Black and Gold” help the Steelers win? He hears sweet music for the Steelers as he predicts, “This will be the toughest Superbowl the Steelers have gone into as far as the opponent, but I predict that the Packers will be up at the half 10-7 and the final result will be a Steelers win 17-13 on a scoring final drive.”
