Rough start damaging to Butler, 56-6
BUTLER TWP — McDowell will not be playing Butler in football this week, that game being canceled due to the Erie school shutting down all fall activities until Oct. 14.
No matter — the Trojans did their damage to Butler a week earlier.
Cathedral Prep responded to last week's 24-10 loss to its city rival by drubbing the Golden Tornado, 56-6, on Butler's Senior Night Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
The Ramblers (3-1) scored on all seven of its first-half possessions after scoring the game's first points by blocking a punt and recovering the ball in the end zone.
“I don't think we can play much better than we did in the first half of this game,” Cathedral Prep coach Mike Mischler said. “That was fantastic.
“I do think last week's loss had something to do with that. This was the best week of practice we've had in a long time. Our guys were ready.”
And they took advantage of some Butler misfortune.
Golden Tornado quarterback Cooper Baxter injured a knee on the game's first possession. He got hurt on a third-down play, forcing place-kicker Alexander Titus to punt.
The punt was easily blocked and recovered by John David Campbell in the end zone for a Rambler touchdown less than two minutes into the game.
With Baxter sidelined, Butler sophomore Mac Schnur went in at quarterback. A botched snap on the Tornado's next play was recovered by Cathedral Prep at the Butler 23-yard line. The Ramblers scored five plays later.
“Just a series of unfortunate things,” Butler coach Eric Christy said of the first few minutes. “They (Prep) took full advantage of that situation.”
The Ramblers added two more touchdowns in the first quarter — taking advantage of field position on drives of 29 and 52 yards — and had a 35-0 lead before Baxter returned to action and put Butler on the board.
The quarterback broke free for a 71-yard touchdown jaunt to cut the gap to 35-6.
“After that run, Cooper said he couldn't feel any strength in his knee, so we shut him down at that point,” Christy said.
Schnur went on to throw for 67 yards, but the Tornado had four turnovers on the night. Baxter rushed for 107 yards.
“That quarterback going out didn't help them any,” Mischler said. “He's quite a player.”
Michael Parks rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns for Cathedral Prep. Tamar Sample rushed for a touchdown and threw a pair of TD passes. He threw for 106 yards.
The Ramblers did not play their first-team offense in the second half.
“We made some plays in the passing game and I was glad to see that,” Mischler said. “We'd been struggling in that area.”
The Ramblers had 250 yards of offense in the first half.
“We have to get physically stronger,” Christy said. “Hopefully, we'll get our younger kids in the weight room in the offseason and get them stronger.”
Butler athletic director Bill Mylan said he is trying to get the Tornado another opponent for next week.
“We're young and we need to play as many games as possible,” Christy said.
