List of possible cases may grow
SAXONBURG — State police Wednesday filed another case against a suspected serial vehicle thief and store robber.
But troopers acknowledged more cases against Matthew J. Peltz, 29, of Jefferson Township are expected once their investigation is completed.
“We’re still going through all the evidence,” Trooper Adam Peth said.
Some of that evidence, he said, includes the results of DNA testing.
Butler Township and Saxonburg police also are reviewing unsolved robbery and theft cases dating back into last year that could be linked to the suspect.
Peltz has been in the Butler County Prison since Feb. 4 when he was arrested a day after allegedly stealing a woman’s sport utility vehicle outside a Jefferson Township store.
A subsequent warrant search of his home at the Saxony Estates mobile home park last week turned up a woman’s purse that was in a 2009 GMC Arcadia stolen in November from the same trailer park, investigators said.
Police on Wednesday charged Peltz with that theft.
In that case, investigators believe Peltz on Nov. 18 stole the Acadia belonging to Tressa Cypher. She told police that she had driven there to drop off a child at her babysitter’s home, according to court documents.
She left the vehicle unlocked and running. When she returned in about five minutes, the vehicle was gone.
Troopers recovered the vehicle Nov. 23 in the parking lot of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Saxonburg, which is close to Peltz’s home.
The vehicle was undamaged. On the front seat and in the center console, Peth said, was loose tobacco — the same kind that police found in Peltz’s bedroom when they searched his home Feb. 5.
District Judge Sue Haggerty on Wednesday arraigned Peltz on a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing the Acadia, and a misdemeanor theft charge for taking Cypher’s purse and its contents.
At the arraignment, Haggerty tacked on another $50,000 to Peltz’s bail, which is now $100,000 in connection with the two vehicle theft cases.
In the other case, police said, Peltz on Feb. 3 went to the BP/Fueland store on Dinnerbell Road in Jefferson Township near his home and stole a shopper’s Ford Explorer that was momentarily left running and unattended in the parking lot.
The next day, police found him — and the stolen Explorer — at his mother’s house in Armstrong County. He confessed to taking the Explorer, documents said, and is charged with felony theft in that case.
Preliminary hearings in connection with the two vehicle thefts — the only two cases for which Peltz has been charged — are set for next Wednesday at Haggerty’s office.
However, Peth said police have identified the defendant as the suspect in several other cases.
Troopers believe Peltz on Jan. 29 went on a three-crime spree that began when he allegedly tried to carjack a woman’s Jeep Patriot at the Fueland store in Jefferson Township.
The woman got away from the would-be robber, who was holding what appeared to be a handgun.
About 10 minutes later, police believe Peltz ran to the nearby Saxony Estates and stole a Jeep Cherokee outside a trailer. The owner had the vehicle running to warm up when it was stolen.
Police believe the one-man crime spree continued about an hour later when the suspect held up the BP/Fueland store on Ekastown Road in Buffalo Township.
Charges in those crimes are pending, Peth said.
Meanwhile, Peltz’s arrest led to evidence that could connect him to even more crimes — three robberies late last year at stores in Butler and Lawrence counties.
Butler Township police Lt. Matthew Pearson confirmed that Peltz is a suspect in the Nov. 21 holdup at the Get Go gas station on Route 8.
Police had not identified Peltz as a suspect in the robbery until his unrelated arrest last week, Pearson admitted.
Peth said state police also suspect Peltz could be the man who held up two Route 19 stores — Book’s Market in Scott Township, Lawrence County, and the Last Minute Mart in Muddy Creek Township just 20 minutes apart on Dec. 5.
In yet even more unsolved cases, Saxonburg police are looking into whether Peltz was the man who tried to rob the Saxonburg Pharmacy on Oct. 16.
Saxonburg police Chief Joe Beachem described Peltz as a “person of interest” in that case.
Additionally, Beachem said police have not ruled out Peltz as a suspect in at least eight vehicle break-ins in the borough between summer and fall 2014.
