Woman accused of fleeing police on 'slow speed' chase

She eventually struck patrol car

A Butler woman, who police said was determined to keep her car from being towed, led officers on a “slow speed” chase through the city Monday.

Melissa M. Lukas, 35, of Butler, was charged with resisting arrest and fleeing from police as well as three summary traffic violations.

According to charging documents, police stopped Lukas around 9:40 p.m. for a suspended registration, which indicated her car insurance was canceled.

Police said Lukas told them The General was her insurance provider, and officers attempted to call the provider with no answer.

According to reports, Lukas was told that she could not drive the vehicle any further, and it was going to be towed.

“Lukas stated, 'No, it's not' and fled in her vehicle,” the investigating officer wrote.

According to documents, Lukas started heading East on North Street and led police on a slow-moving chase at around 40 mph for less than one half of a mile.

Police said during the chase, they tried to position their own vehicle in front of Lukas' vehicle to bring it to a stop, but in doing so, Lukas eventually crashed into the police cruiser on East Brady Street.

“Lukas then accelerated when she had plenty of room to avoid the police cruiser, ultimately striking Patrol Unit No. 3 and disabling her vehicle,” the officer said. Lukas was then arrested.

A preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
