Knoch breaks out of early funk
JEFFERSON TWP — For the first 10 quarters of this young season, the Knoch boys basketball team was in a funk.
The Knights had scored just 81 points in the first two-and-a-half games and were staring at another halftime deficit at home Tuesday night against Indiana.
Then, things started to click.
Knoch (1-2) scored 36 points in the second half — including shooting 15-of-18 from the free throw line in the final quarter — to edge Indiana, 57-50.
“In the first half, we were out of sorts,” said Knoch coach Ron McNabb. “We just totally forgot about Mac (Christy) and I was disappointed about that.”
Instead, the Knights jacked up 18 3-pointers in that first half and made just five of them.
Things were strikingly different in the second half as Christy scored 12 of his game-high 16 points —10 in third quarter.
Indiana (1-2) had no answer for Knoch's 6-foot-5 junior forward.
Christy had just four points on four field goal attempts in the first two quarters.
“That's not who we are,” McNabb said. “We're an inside-out team. Geez, oh man, Mac is just a beast and that's our strength. We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and got some high-low stuff for Mac, got him the ball a lot more, and got him in position to score.”
Indiana, though, scored the first six points of the second half to take a 29-21 lead.
Knoch was not fazed and outscored the Indians 19-7 the rest of the quarter to take the lead for good.
“The second half is how we should be playing for the rest of the year, basically,” said junior guard Austin Hannes, who is back on the court after missing nearly half of last season with a knee injury. “We weren't clicking in the first two games, then in the second half, everything started to click.”
Knoch iced the game in the fourth quarter at the free throw line and was 17-of-21 from the charity line in the game.
Indiana also shot well from the line, making 18-of-21.
“There was no panic in these guy's eyes,” McNabb said. “I was really pleased with that.”
Hannes added 12 points for Knoch, which was 3-of-5 from 3-point range in the second half.
Ryan Hoff led Indiana with 13 points. Jake Benhart and Dylan Stapleton each scored 11 for the Indians.
Knoch will host Hampton in its first section game Friday.
