The name of the county's airport in Penn Township has changed to The Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport.

PENN TWP — Butler County’s airport has a new name that hearkens back to its original name from decades ago.

The Butler County Airport Authority board has renamed the facility The Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport to more accurately reflect the scope of its business, said Ike Kelly, airport manager and board member.

Kelly said the airport has seen increasing corporate traffic for travelers whose final destinations are Pittsburgh and Cranberry Township, and wanted to revise its name to reflect that fact.

The airport also is the designated reliever for Pittsburgh International Airport, Kelly said, and has begun to see smaller corporate jets use its facilities as well.

The name change is similar to the airport’s original moniker, The Pittsburgh-Butler Airport, which was the name when the facility was created in 1929.

Kelly said the airport board voted Thursday to change the facility’s name, but it could take up to 60 days for the change to become official with organizations such as the Federal Aviation Administration and the Pennsylvania Bureau of Aviation.

The name change will not affect the Butler County Airport Authority, which was established in 1949.

The authority owns and operates the facility’s 230-acre site, which is home to more than 100 aircraft.
