Police charge teen with theft of tools

Hearing set for Nov. 25

DONEGAL TWP — A Butler teenager was arraigned Monday on charges he and another man heisted thousands of dollars worth of tools and other property belonging to a roofer.

Jase W. Charlton, 18, of Butler admitted to his role in the Sept. 20 break-in at a home on Garing Road in Donegal Township, where owner Thomas Garing also maintains a roofing business, state police said.

Police arrested Charlton last week, two days after they charged the defendant’s alleged accomplice, 22-year-old Luke Andrew Blackham of Lyndora.

Blackham worked for Garing until he was fired a week or two before the break-in and theft. The firing apparently angered Blackham, according to court documents.

Garing told police that he believed Blackham wanted to start his own roofing business.

Investigators questioned Blackham, who initially denied taking the property. Later, however, he allegedly confessed.

He told police that he and Charlton entered Garing’s residence and took the items “because (Garing) is rich and he didn’t think Garing would miss them,” a police affidavit said.

Along with the tools, the suspects allegedly stole money and a dirt bike.

Blackham told police that he sold some of the stolen items for money but that he still had other property at his home.

Police searched the home and recovered a gas-powered air compressor, welder and roof jacks, all owned by Garing.

Investigators later interviewed Charlton who “admitted to (police) that he was involved in taking all of the items except the cash,” documents said.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Charlton on charges of burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, attempted burglary, theft and receiving stolen property.

Charlton and Blackham, who faces similar charges, are both free on their own recognizance. They face preliminary hearings Nov. 25 at Stoughton’s office in Chicora.
