SV can't tame Tigers
WEXFORD — It takes a really good team to keep pace with North Allegheny's boys volleyball team.
Actually beating the Tigers takes ... well, something no team has been able to muster this season.
Seneca Valley was the latest team to take a shot Tuesday night.
After letting slim leads slip away in the first two sets, the Raiders broke through in the third only to get buried under the Tigers' wave of momentum in a 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 14-25 road loss.
In the most recent Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings, the Tigers (11-0) were judged as the best team in the state while Seneca Valley (11-2, 8-2) was third.
“Our offense was better tonight than the first game, but we need to do a better job of blocking,” said SV coach Brett Poirier. “Against NA, we have to play our best and we didn't do that.
“We're learning as we go.”
SV led in the first set as late as 18-17 and two kills from Dawson Ward helped the Raiders tie the second set at 14, but the Tigers prevailed, led by play at the net from seniors Michael Mosbacher and Garrett Hrvoich.
Facing defeat, Grant Hoover and Michael Devlin helped SV build a 15-11 lead in the third and the Raiders never trailed again.
Devlin tallied five of his team-leading 17 kills in that third set, but the Tigers managed a six-point run in the fourth — sparked by a pair of blocks from David Sanfillipo — that gave the Tigers a commanding 19-11 edge.
“We had some pivotal blocks in the fourth that opened the door to some hitting errors from Seneca,” said NA coach Dan Schall. “Things snowballed on them from there.”
NA had already defeated the Raiders 3-1 earlier this season. The only other team to take a set from the Tigers this season is Fox Chapel.
“They have a lot of weapons,” Poirier said of the Tigers. “Hopefully, we'll get two more shots at them, in the WPIAL playoffs and maybe at states.”
Ward added 13 kills in defeat for the Raiders, who close the regular season at home Thursday against Butler.
NA's kills were spread out. Mosbacher led the way with 12, Timmy Ditka had 11 and Hrvoich and Sanfillipo both had 10.
“Our offense is really balanced and we're able to hit from everywhere on the court,” said Schall. “It's a challenge to defend us.”
The Tigers won WPIAL and PIAA titles in 2018 and 2019 before last year was wiped out by COVID-19. Even so, Schall had a good idea of what he had coming back.
“I was pretty confident in this group,” he said. “These guys have been developing since they were young. I know the quality and ability of these kids.”
