Man crashes vehicle into utility pole on Rt. 8

A man was taken to the hospital after suffering an apparent medical emergency this morning and crashing his car into a utility pole along Route 8 in Brady Township, authorities said.

The wreck about 8:20 a.m., north of Staff Road, closed one lane on the busy highway and left nearly two dozen nearby homes without electrical service.

State police are investigating but an accident report was not immediately available.

The man, whose name was not released, was headed south when he lost control of his car and crossed over the northbound lane, hitting and shearing off the pole, emergency crews said. Rescuers said it appeared an unknown medical issue caused the crash.

The man did not appear to have an injuries in the accident. His passenger was not hurt.

At one point, rescuers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the driver before a Butler Ambulance Service crew took him to Butler Memorial Hospital, His condition was not known.

The accident closed the southbound lane for more than an hour.

West Penn Power reported as many as 20 customers were without service.
