Nafis Brown

A Philadelphia man was sentenced Thursday to state prison after being charged in three drug-related cases in Butler.

Nafis A. Brown, 25, was sentenced to a total of 2 to 5 years in a state correctional facility. He was also ordered to pay court costs by Butler County Judge William Shaffer. Brown has served 270 days of that sentence following his arrest.

Brown pleaded guilty March 14 to three felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and one count of conspiracy to commit possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

He was initially charged with two counts of felony possession with intent and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance after an incident Sept. 27; felony possession with intent and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance after a traffic stop Oct. 2; and felony possession with intent, conspiracy, misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia following a search warrant on the same day.

Butler County Drug Task Force officers reported in the Sept. 27 incident that Brown sold heroin to a confidential informant on 8th Avenue in Butler.

Officers then began conducting surveillance on a home in the 500 block of Fairground Hill Road, Butler, that was known to be frequented by Brown.

On Oct. 2, Brown was seen exiting the home, getting into a vehicle and driving away. Police conducted a traffic stop for illegal window tinting on East Jefferson Street, and Brown was found to be driving on a suspended license.

During a pat down, police said 16 bags of heroin were discovered on his person, as well as $329 in cash and three cell phones. Brown was arrested and the task force, in turn, obtained a search warrant for the house.

Inside the home were Anthony L. Williams, 27, who police said was a native of Philadelphia, and Chelsey L. Schlagel, 22, of Butler. Found at the home, documents said, was a book bag, which police said belonged to Brown and contained about 24 grams of crack, $5,380 in currency and drug packaging materials. Officers also found Williams with $455 in currency and seized three more cell phones and a scale during the search.

Williams and Schlagel were both charged with felony counts of possession with intent, conspiracy, and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Williams’ charges were dismissed. Schlagel is free on bail, awaiting court proceedings.
