Seneca Valley pitcher Zach Spangler prepares to cut loose with a pitch during his complete-game five-hitter Friday against North Allegheny. Seneca Valley clinched the section title with the win.

JACKSON TWP — On the mound and at the plate, Zach Spangler left his mark all over this section title.

The Seneca Valley junior pitched a complete game, allowing just three runs on five hits in the Raiders' 7-3 victory over North Allegheny at Raider Field Friday afternoon.

Spangler also led SV's 10-hit attack with a single and two doubles.

The victory clinches for the Raiders (13-3, 9-2) a second straight Section 1-AAAA title.

“This win was huge,” Spangler said. “It gives us momentum that, hopefully, we'll be able to take over the next month.”

SV coach Eric Semega was pleased with Spangler's all-around effort.

“Today, he put it together at both ends,” he said. “He's been hitting all year, that's why he's in the number five spot in the order.”

Spangler did not allow a baserunner until Brandon Bergstrom's double in the top of the fourth inning. Bergstrom scored on a flyout later in the inning.

The right-hander entered the top of the seventh inning with a 7-1 lead before giving up a two-run home run to Sean Fitzgerald.

For the vast majority of the game, however, Spangler had the upper hand against NA's lineup.

“He retired the side in order in five of seven innings and that's very tough to do,” Semega said. “He had total command of all his pitches today.”

Spangler is SV's No. 3 starter, but don't tell that to North Allegheny coach Andy Maddix.

“We knew that he's talented,” he said. “At most schools, he'd be a No. 1. He's just on a very good team and he pitched well today.”

Spangler's day included four strikeouts and, just as important, no walks.

“I felt completely comfortable,” he said. “I knew what I needed to do, throw strikes. And I knew the offense would score for me.”

Of course, Spangler had a hand in that as well.

His double to lead off the second inning led to courtesy runner Zach Bredl scoring on Connor Coward's sacrifice fly for the game's first run.

In the Raiders' next half inning, Jason Martin singled home Sam Fragale and Austin Bream. Bredl, who had come in following an infield single by Spangler earlier in the inning, scored on Carson Kessler's groundout.

“Credit to them,” said Maddix of the Raiders. “They did everything they needed to do to win the game.”

The Raiders added three more runs in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.

NA's starting pitcher was Mitch Machi, who took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two and was followed by relievers Patrick Mittereder and Andrew Kuwik, who pitched the fifth and sixth inning, respectively.

Seneca Valley's goals reach far beyond winning a section title, but it's a good place to start.

“It's important to win the section because you get the opportunity to get that bye,” said Semega. “With as many good teams as there are in the WPIAL this year, getting a bye would be a huge advantage.”
