Wild win and SRU advances
SLIPPERY ROCK — It wasn't a track meet.
Saturday's Slippery Rock University's 65-59 NCAA Division II football quarterfinal win over Notre Dame of Ohio at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium just looked like it, that's all.
The game featured pass completions of 57, 81, 70 and 85 yards — three of those for touchdowns — in the first six minutes.
Both teams scored three touchdowns in the first quarter.
“We've played in some high-scoring games, but I've never seen anything like this,” Notre Dame coach Mike Jacobs said.
The teams combined for 1,234 yards of offense. That's not including a 96-yard kick return for a touchdown.
“I've been coaching football here for more than 20 years, played football at West Virginia University ... This was the wildest, craziest game I've ever been a part of,” SRU coach Shawn Lutz said.
“The ebb and flow was constant. Taking blows, throwing punches, the passion on the field by both teams was incredible.”
So was the crowd.
“This place was packed. I love the support of our student section, the community, how loud they were,” Lutz said.
“We definitely have a home-field advantage here.
SRU has won 39 of its 42 home games since 2013. The Rock (13-0) hosts fellow unbeaten Minnesota State (13-0) at 12:30 p.m. this Saturday in the national semifinals.
The game will mark SRU's first semifinal appearance since 1998, when it lost at Carson-Newman (Tenn.).
