WINFIELD TWP — Nine volunteer fire departments needed several hours to put out 20 hay bales on fire at a Winfield Road field Saturday.

Chief Mike Remper of the Winfield Volunteer Fire Company said between 30,000 and 40,000 gallons of water were used to douse the blaze.

“We dumped a lot, a lot, of water,” he said.

Remper said crews had to ensure all the hot spots were doused, so the fire would not rekindle.

Remper said it was time-consuming to break apart the bales to extinguish all the flames.

“You had to get down inside the center,” he said.

Remper said although the weather was not blistering, the temperature was sufficiently high to force the rotation of firefighters during the call.

“It was hot enough,” he said.

Roughly 60 firefighters responded to the 4:48 p.m. 911 call.

The Buffalo, Sarver, Herman, Saxonburg, East Butler, South Buffalo, Worthington and Harrison Hills volunteer fire departments assisted Winfield.

Remper said the Ambrose Farm rents the property. According to the township, Edward Garey and Lyle Painter own the property.

Crews cleared the scene at 9:02 p.m.
