Butler police arrested a man they say was intoxicated early Saturday morning when he allegedly led them on a brief vehicle chase.

Carl Houston, 26, of Butler is facing felony fleeing and other charges in the incident that began about 2 a.m., police said, when a patrol officer spotted him run a red light at McKean and Jefferson streets.

The defendant continued northbound on McKean Street at a “high rate of speed,” according to court documents, and he failed to come to a complete stop at two intersections before turning onto Penn Street.

He is accused of running another red light at Penn and Main streets. The pursuing officer, whose emergency lights were already on, activated his siren.

Houston turned onto North Washington Street and continued speeding in his 2011 Suzuki sedan before making another turn onto Fulton Street and eventually pulling over, police said,

The defendant was arrested and taken to the station for a breath test, which showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.178 percent — more than twice the state's 0.08 percent legal limit for alcohol.

A passenger in the car was sent on his way, police said.

Officers searched the car and found two open containers of spirits on the back seat floor and an open bottle of beer in the driver's cup holder.

District Judge William Fullerton arraigned Houston on a felony charge of fleeing or attempting to elude police and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence.

He also was cited for driving with an open container of alcohol, two counts of failing to stop at a red light, and reckless driving. He is free on his own recognizance.
