SR council: Vacant lot may be developed

Slippery Rock Borough Council decided at a Tuesday workshop to put some community action items onto the agenda for its next regular meeting.

Discussion among the council members about a vacant lot owned by the borough turned into agreement that it may be well utilized as a new business space rather than a green space. Mayor Jondavid Longo said the area has enough green space, and he would like to see space be used for development.

“We already have 67 acres of green space,” Longo said.

The council asked for the appraisal of the value of the vacant lot to be included on its next meeting agenda.

Also at the meeting, borough manager Shawn Pugh talked about the borough's need for new vehicles for the police department and street department.

Pugh said the truck used by the street department is costing more money to maintain than it is worth, and two police cars are beginning to need a large amount of maintenance.

“It's in very bad shape,” Pugh said of the street department truck. “Every time they take these cars, it seems like something else is breaking down on them.”

Pugh also suggested that the street committee meet with members of council to come up with a list of borough roads that need to be repaved, and which streets should be high priority.

He said the process from selecting roads to be repaved individually to the actual paving itself can be lengthy when done inefficiently.

“Last year we were able to do two,” Pugh said.
