Still perfect
A triple, two singles, three runs scored and four stolen bases.
Wyatt Everetts proved pretty productive in the No. 8 spot of the Karns City batting order Monday at Pullman Park.
On this day, the Gremlins needed his arm as well.
The left-hander came on to strike out consecutive hitters with one out and the tying run at third base in the sixth inning, helping Karns City remain unbeaten with an 11-8 baseball victory over Vincentian Academy.
Vincentian trailed 7-2 entering that frame, but a two-run triple by Jay Cortese capped a four-run rally that caused KC coach Randy Collins to summon Everetts to the mound from center field.
“He's a battler, a fighter, and I knew he'd go right at them,” Collins said.
No Vincentian batter had struck out all day. But Everetts fanned No. 5 hitter Jake Bartoszewicz on three pitches, then whiffed Anthony Smalldino to preserve the lead.
Bartoszewicz and Smalldino were carrying batting averages of .333 and .412, respectively.
“I wasn't looking for the strikeout and was a little surprised I got them,” Everetts said. “I have confidence in our defense. All I wanted to do was throw strikes.”
Everetts has a delayed motion to his wind-up which may have thrown off the first two hitters he faced.
“It seemed to affect our two guys there a bit, still, he wasn't overpowering and we swung and missed,” Vincentian coach Jay Fennell said. “But I have to give their kid credit. He got us out when he needed to.
“And their kids hit the ball.”
The Gremlins hit the ball all day.
Karns City scored in every inning, using a 13-hit attack to overcome an uncharacteristic six errors defensively.
“That's what I like about our team,” Collins said of the offense. “Everybody contributes. We have a lot of speed and we try to take advantage of it.
“This was a step up in quality of opponent for us. We're not used to facing pitchers like this, or hitters like this. This was good for us today.”
Vincentian had won its first seven games of the season before dropping a 4-3 decision to Sewickley Academy on Saturday.
Nathan Weckerly tripled, doubled and singled for the Gremlins, collecting two RBI. Matt Yough had two singles and two RBI as KC improved to 9-0.
“We like holding on to a won-loss record like that. Maybe it plants doubt into our opponent before we play,” Everetts said. “We'll take any kind of advantage we can get.”
Everybody in KC's starting lineup reached base via walk or hit Monday.
Mars resident Phil Madonna had three singles and scored three runs for Vincentian. Starting and losing pitcher Ian Taylor had three RBI. Taylor worked two innings and threw 44 pitches.
The visitors committed four errors and failed to score with a runner at third and one out in the second inning, bases loaded and no one out in the fourth.
“Twice, we swung at ball four with the bases loaded, made outs when we should have scored runs,” Fennell said. “It was one of those days. We embarrassed ourselves and embarrassed the program.”
Both teams used four pitchers in the non-league contest.
