Rockets hold on

Slippery Rock goalkeeper Jason Bluedorn manages to divert a shot by Knoch as the Knights' Ben Lope (14) and Slippery Rock's Marty Doyle (15) move in on the play Tuesday. The visiting Rockets won the boys soccer game, 3-2.

Slippery Rock took a 2-0 lead over Knoch through the first half and held on for a 3-2 boys soccer victory on Tuesday.

Ben Magliocca, Luc LaChance and Mark Cessar scored for the Rockets (4-2), while Magliocca and Cessar also recorded assists. Jason Bluedorn made eight saves for Slippery Rock.

It marked the first defeat for the Knights (3-1-2), who received goals from Nick Kadunce and Brandon Vargo.

Butler 1, Pine-Richland 0 — John Fleming scored on a header off of a corner kick from Wes Eckstein as the Golden Tornado improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the section.

Adam Voelker earned the shutout in net.

Shady Side Academy 3, Mars 1 — The Planets (3-2, 2-1) fell to the Indians in this Section 2-AA clash.

Girls Volleyball

Freeport beat Knoch 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21.

The Yellowjackets were led by Zoe Pawlak, who posted 12 kills, 13 service points, four aces and four blocks. Alexis Schrecengost has 12 service points, nine kills and two blocks.

Freeport (3-0) was also aided by Megan Sweeny’s 14 service points, four kills and three blocks, 11 service points and 18 digs from Brittney Bianco and 18 service points from Emily Toy.

Knoch’s Celina Sanks tallied 17 kills and 10 blocks and Katie Bozzo nine kills and 17 assists.

Grove City 3, Sharon 0 — The Eagles coasted to a 25-12, 25-7, 25-13 win behind eight aces, 18 service points and nine digs from Jenn Ferguson.

Jordyn Wyllie had a team-high seven kills, while Corianne Hyduchak and McKenzie Fagan added five apiece. Arianna Sprando tallied 15 assists and Stephanie Risch had a team-high 10 digs for Grove City.

Union 3, Venango Catholic 0 — The Damsels picked up wins of 25-10, 25-20, 25-20 en route to a sweep on Monday.

Beau Rankin led the way with 13 assists and six aces. Leah Conner tallied five kills and 11 service points, while Kassie McGarrity had 11 service points and three aces.

Mars 3, Valley 0 — The Planets cruised to this Section 4-AA win by scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 25-15.

Natalie Grice led the way with 12 assists and teammate Alexi Zika had eight kills, eight digs, and five service aces.

Clarion 3, A-C Valley 0 — The Falcons fell by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-22.

Makayli Terwilliger posted a team-high eight kills, while Jess Callender had eight service points and four kills. Sadie Longo added eight service points, three aces and a team-high five assists for the Falcons (1-2).

Also for A-C Valley, Melanie Lewis chipped in six service points and two aces, Halee Wetzel eight digs and Katie Stumpner six digs and two kills.

The A-C Valley JV team (3-0) won 25-7, 17-25, 25-12..

Hickory 3, Slippery Rock 1 — Brooklyn Walsh recorded six aces, but the Rockets fell 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22.

Slippery Rock (1-1, 0-1) will look to bounce back Thursday at Greenville.

Moniteau 3, Venango Catholic 1 — The Warriors (1-1) won by scores of 25-14, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-23. No other details were available.

Cross Country

Karns City’s Emily Schumacher finished first overall with a time of 21 minutes, 57 seconds as the Gremlin girls defeated Keystone 23-33.

In the boys’ meet, A-C Valley topped Keystone 26-32, paced by John Anderson’s first-place time of 20:32. KC beat the Falcons 23-38 as John Garing placed third overall for the Gremlins.

The meet also included runners from Union.

Zoe McCafferty and Gretchen Wilson won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, as Butler beat Seneca Valley 3-2.

Picking up the other victory for Butler (5-3, 4-3) was the doubles team of Olivia Girdano and Emma Brestensky.
