Ice cream stand opens up

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Get your ice cream taste buds ready for the new Debbie Lee’s Delight ice cream stand on Route 68, next to the Sud Shack beer distributorship.

One of the owners, Ron Spangler, said Tuesday the stand is named in honor of his late sister-in-law, and is a real family operation with owners Ron, Larry, David, Heather and Meagan Spangler.

The family also owns the Sud Shack, the next-door mini-mart and Spangler’s Paving.

“So we’re completely diversified now,” Spangler said of the ice cream stand.

Planning for the stand, which opened today at 11 a.m., began about four or five years ago.

That planning led the Spanglers to tear down an old house and to build a children’s playground and half basketball court for customers.

There also is a big screen TV outside for entertainment.

“We wanted the playground and the basketball court so parents can sit and talk together while the kids run off some of their sugar energy,” he said.

The menu has 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream and 24 flavors of frozen yogurt, with special concoctions to be announced.

“We’re going to get ice cream under our belt and then we’ll look to adding other foods,” Spangler said.

His niece, Meagan, is managing the new business with 18 employees.

The stand will be open into the fall.

“We’re just going to see how it goes,” Spangler said.
