More than $170K restitution ordered in arson case

A Butler man was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation and ordered to pay more than $170,000 in restitution after pleading guilty in four cases, including a 2018 arson in the city.

County Judge Timothy McCune sentenced William L. Gold, 53, of Butler to serve 60 months of probation including 15 months of house arrest and to pay $173,892.80 in restitution. Most of the restitution goes to State Farm Insurance and Castle Claims Service.

State police arrested Gold on arson and other felony charges in March 2018 for paying an accomplice $1,000 to burn down a rental home at 111 South St. in May 2017. In that case, he was sentenced to serve 60 months of probation including 15 months of house arrest.

The accomplice, Robert James Wilhelm, 43, of Petrolia pleaded guilty to arson and burglary charges in February 2019. He was sentenced to 24 to 60 months of house arrest and ordered to pay the same amount as Gold in restitution.

In addition, Gold was sentenced to concurrently serve 60 months of probation including 15 months of house arrest after pleading guilty to a felony charge of possession of drugs with intent to deliver filed by city police in December 2017.

He was sentenced to concurrently serve 24 months of probation including six months of house arrest after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of simple assault filed by city police in February 2020.

He also was sentenced to concurrently serve 12 months of probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of statement under penalty filed by state police in January 2018.
