Cress nets 42 points, but Mars falls, 73-71

Steve Cress poured in 42 points, but the Mars boys basketball team fell on the short side of a 73-71 decision to Indiana Tuesday.

Cress connected on 13 baskets, including three 3-pointers, and converted 13 of 17 shots from the free-throw line.

Vinny Smith added 13 points for Mars while the Indians had five players reach double figures.

Kiski Area 54, Butler 15 — In the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs, the host Cavaliers used seven pins to roll past the Tornado."Kiski obviously is a great team," said Butler coach Scott Stoner. "They were aggressive. They had a great crowd ... and they pretty much put it on us. You'll not win a dual meet doing that."The Tornado got a pin from freshman Cole Baxter at 130 pounds while freshman Mike Crawford (125) earned a 13-6 decision. Alex Evanoff won by forfeit at 145 to account for the Tornado's other win."Cole Baxter got physical," said Stoner. "He put on a physical, aggressive attack. That's what we needed out of our lineup. He's one athlete who went all out."Once again, the Tornado reached the team playoffs but couldn't get past the first round.
