Lancaster Twp. Old Home Day festival Nov. 4

LANCASTER TWP — County history lovers should mark their calendars for the township Historic Records Committee's annual Old Home Day.

The free festival will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Middle Lancaster Community Center, 113 King's Alley, Harmony.

In addition to refreshments, basket raffles and door prizes, local master storyteller Bill May will give a presentation on a 1902 shootout in the county involving the Biddle Boys and the county jail warden's wife, Katherine Soffel.

“The Biddle Boys, Escape, Capture and Death of the County's Most Notorious Outlaws” will be presented at 1:30 p.m.

The famous crime story was the basis for a 1984 feature film, “Mrs. Soffel,” starring Diane Keaton and Mel Gibson.

Also featured at Old Home Day will be township historical photographs, memorabilia and scrapbooks. Several books and a DVD will be available for suggested donations.

Township history can be accessed at the Historical Center behind Sally's Cider Press on Route 19. Hours are 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and from 6 to 8 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.

Appointments are also available for the Historical Center.
