Miller Minutes: ‘Each gravestone represents a life lived’
Have you ever walked around a cemetery this time of year? When the wind is cold, the ground is wet and leaves crunch with your every step?
I had occasion to take such a cemetery walk last weekend, and was reminded of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This tale of a headless horseman roaming a burial ground sends a chill down my spine every time. And it’s not the only story that does so.
Do you know just how many famous stories involve the dead and undead? “Frankenstein,” “Pet Sematary,” “The Book Thief,” “The Graveyard Book” and dozens more I can’t name, all involve dead things rising up, or those beyond connecting with the living from the other side.
These stories of unfinished business, set against the backdrop of a spooky cemetery, remind us that each gravestone represents a life lived. If you enjoy a graveyard walk like me, do you ever stop to read the names? To ponder what portions of history they experienced?
If you have never taken this sort of “spooky walk,” this weekend could be a great occasion to do so (just make sure you abide cemetery hours).
Of course, there are other terrifically terrifying events you can attend in Butler County as well. I suggest you check those out below.
