Zelienople winery to put its craft to the test in blind taste test event Aug. 22
Papa Joe’s Wine Cellar, a small-batch local winery in Zelienople, is putting its selection of wines to the test against some of the most famous wineries and vineyards in the world.
On Aug. 22, Papa Joe’s is hosting the “Judgment of Zelienople” — a blind taste test which will pit six wines from the Papa Joe’s menu against six comparable wines from California, Italy, and the nation’s Northeast. To ensure fairness, labels will be hidden.
Types of wines that will be compared include dry Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo, Nero d’Avola, Aglianico and Petite Sirah.
The name is a reference to the 1976 “Judgment of Paris,” when a selection of both red and white wines from California unexpectedly came out on top in a blind taste test against competing French wines, which were thought to be the best in the world. That event established Napa Valley, Calif., as the wine-making powerhouse it is today.
There will be two separate judgings: one performed by the general public, and another by a panel of wine experts.
A ticket is required to be part of the wine tasting, and attendance is limited. Tickets are $60 each.
