Stay safe in the heat this holiday weekend

Fourth of July celebrations take many forms, but one thing most have in common is taking place outside. This year, that could require some extra caution.

From the Midwest to the Eastern Seaboard, a heat wave is descending upon the country just in time for its birthday festivities.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures locally in the 90s through the weekend with dew points in the upper 60s and 70s making it feel even warmer. NWS expects heat index figures once all is accounted for in the 100s.

Those hitting the road for the holiday are unlikely to see much relief. Temperatures are expected to reach triple digits in some areas without even accounting for humidity. The “heat dome” is expected to stretch across the continental U.S. from north to south.

Whether sticking close to home or heading further afield for the holiday, it’s wise to keep temperatures in mind.

The biggest thing to remember when dealing with the heat is staying hydrated. Consuming an adequate amount of fluids can help avoid serious heat-related conditions, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Especially when celebrating the holidays, paying attention to what fluids you consume is important. For instance, alcoholic, caffeinated and sugary drinks can work as diuretics, actually worsening dehydration.

Additionally, wearing light-colored, loose clothing and seeking shade, or even cool places indoors, when needed can help beat the heat.

Those traveling should keep the same things in mind, but should make sure to account for things like fluids and items that can cast shade during the journey in addition to at the destination.

Anyone looking to celebrate America’s 250th birthday this weekend should be sure to take steps to stay safe so celebration doesn’t turn tragic.
