The Regatta has become a tradition at Moraine State Park and it has now survived for 27 years. It’s such a great way to commemorate what is a pretty great resource.

Lake Arthur is a human-made lake created in 1970 that forms the basis for Moraine State Park. The 3,225-acre lake has 42 miles of shoreline — pretty big for a human-made lake — and while people can enjoy the park year-round, the Regatta brings everything great about Moraine to the surface.

A minimuseum, seed planting, a car cruise, yoga, disc golf and a scavenger hunt were on the schedule for the weekend, which are all great ways to enjoy Lake Arthur and the shore. There were also guided hikes, a fun run and kayaking, which helped get people on the move and show them around the state park. Live music always plays at the regatta and the fireworks that punctuate Saturday night are always a good send off for the evening. They were good for returning park-goers and for people who have never visited.

One of the missions of the regatta is to simply get people to Moraine State Park. State parks are resources that receive public money for their upkeep and programming and the administrators of Moraine want to see people get the most out of the spot.

Although the regatta is only one weekend long, it hopefully inspired people to get more into state parks. Hopefully it sparked something in at least one person, a fuse that leads them to want to return to the park again, even when there is no special event taking place there.

The park belongs to all Pennsylvanians, after all.
