Mike Kelly calls for funding for 228 expansion project
U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, has endorsed Butler County’s funding request for the final, fifth and most expensive segment of the Gateway 228 expansion project.
In a Friday, June 26 news release, Kelly announced his support via a letter to United States Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
“The Gateway 228 project is in the homestretch, and this funding will help to complete this final portion of road connecting communities across southern Butler County,” Kelly said in the news release. “From Cranberry Township to Valencia, completing work along Route 228 is essential for local residents and local businesses.”
The $60.99 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Grant would partially fund the $122 million needed to widen and reconstruct the final 3.2-mile section of Route 228 from Franklin Road in Cranberry Township to Pittsburgh Street in Adams Township.
According to previous reporting, Butler County Commissioner Kim Geyer said the costs will be high due to the right of way acquisition and hilly terrains. As of June 2026, 10 of 11 road segments in Gateway 228 have been completed or are under construction. $184 million has been spent on the construction including $45 million in federal BUILD grants.
Kelly helped to secure the BUILD grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2018 and 2020, gaining a total of $45 million for the project, the news release said.
