Cora Matchett

Matchett

Cora Anne Matchett, a beloved mother, grandmother, friend and cherished member of the community, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and profound devotion.

Born and raised in Wilkinsburg, Pa., she lived her early married years in Penn Hills before moving to Middlesex Township in 1968, where she built her life and home.

Cora lived a life of love, laughter and joy.

Cora was a pillar of strength and reliability, dedicating 50 years of her life to her career as a legal secretary. Her remarkable work ethic was matched by her deeply nurturing soul. She spent 13 years lovingly caring for both her mother, Velma, and her mother-in-law, Katherine Matchett, in her own home; and later patiently nursed her husband through a long illness.

Deeply invested in her local community, Cora also worked alongside her husband to help the Glade Run Conservancy restore Glade Run Lake, leaving a beautiful natural legacy for generations to come.

Her commitment to others was balanced by a vibrant, unforgettable personality. Known for her mischievous sense of humor, kind heart, competitive streak and a wonderful touch of sassiness and stubbornness, Cora brought energy and light into every room she entered. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Above all else, Cora’s greatest pride and joy were her daughter and grandchildren. She loved them to no end and thought the absolute world of her son-in-law. As a grandmother, she was an enthusiastic fixture in her grandchildren’s lives. She loved nothing more than watching her grandchildren win — except, perhaps, when they played cards with her.

She especially cherished taking family road trips with her daughter and grandchildren to Taekwondo tournaments — traveling near and far across Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina — and she loved cheering them on there, as well as at their tennis matches. Her favorite moments were spent singing and dancing with them to her favorite song, “You Are My Sunshine,” and gleefully saying “yes” to absolutely everything her grandchildren wanted that their mom had just said “no” to.

Cora was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Andrew Russell Matchett, in 2017; her mother, Velma Wagner Ewing Oswald, in 2001; her father, Eugene Earl Ewing, in 1955; and her mother-in-law, Katherine Matchett, in 1992. Cora was an only child.

Her legacy lives on through her devoted family: daughter, Michele Matchett, and her husband, Eric Gillespie, of Middlesex Township; and grandchildren, Jackson “Jack” Connor Matchett Gillespie, a rising junior at Miami University, and Katherine “Kate” Macallan Matchett Gillespie, a rising senior at Aquinas Academy, both of Middlesex Township.
