Thunderstorm wreaks havoc in Butler County Sunday night

A strong thunderstorm blew through Butler County and the rest of Western Pennsylvania around 6 p.m. Sunday, June 15, leaving behind a trail of downed trees and wires.

A Butler County emergency dispatcher said the majority of the initial damage was centered in the northern part of the county, including areas such as Petrolia and Summit and Clay townships. In the latter, a tree fell directly across William Flynn Highway, near the Rock House Bar & Grill.

When asked how many incidents of trees and wires down took place Sunday night, the dispatcher responded, “it’s all over the place.”

Although Butler County was placed under a tornado watch, no tornadoes had been reported, according to dispatch.

The dispatcher also said no injuries were reported as a result of the storm as of 6:40 p.m. Sunday.

As of 6:52 p.m. Sunday, West Penn Power reported 1,273 outages among its Butler County customers, or 1.44% of the company’s customer base in the county. Areas with more than 100 outages included Muddy Creek Township with 239, Winfield Township with 160, and Slippery Rock Township with 142.

Butler County’s other electric provider, Central Electric Cooperative, is reporting 540 outages — five percent of the 9,820 customers it serves in the county. A large majority of the outages are located in the northwest part of the county.
