U.S. Steel on Monday, June 8, outlined the economic impact of a $2.5 billion project that would add more than 6,300 jobs at its Mon Valley Works over a three-year span.

An economic impact analysis study said the project would generate up to $58 million in state and local tax revenue with a total economic impact of $1.7 billion for the state.

The investment includes the construction of a new hot strip mill at the Mon Valley Works Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Allegheny County.

It will replace an 87-year-old hot strip mill at the nearby Irvin Works, which is slated for decommissioning as part of the modernization effort.

The study reflects the scope of Japan-based Nippon Steel’s planned investment in Mon Valley Works.

In August 2024, Nippon Steel announced an initial capital investment of no less than $1 billion for Mon Valley Works. Updated projections indicate the total investment may range from about $2 billion to $2.5 billion, according to U.S. Steel.

“The Mon Valley Works is where the American steel industry was first forged and this investment is proof that its best days are still ahead,” said David B. Burritt, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker. “This investment means thousands of good-paying jobs protected, a world-class facility and steel that will supply American automakers and manufacturers for generations. This is what investing in America looks like.”

The economic impact analysis study was completed by Parker Strategy Group using economic modeling software and is based on projected construction and labor expenditures within Pennsylvania over an about three-year project period beginning in 2026.
