Portersville Christian middle schooler wins archery national championship in Louisville
Wyatt Schilling, a middle school student at Portersville Christian School, competed in the Eastern Nationals Archery Championship May 7 in Louisville, Ky., and won the 3-D tournament national title and finished fourth in the bullseye competition.
He is Portersville’s first national champion, according to the school, and also has three other championship wins this year. He competed against 1,780 middle school male archers in the 3-D field and 2,733 in the bullseye event.
He scored a 297 (out of 300 possible points) in the 3-D competition, which requires archers to walk an outdoor course and shoot life-sized foam models of animals such as deer.
A few days later, the National Archery in the Schools Program named him an Academic All-American in both disciplines.
“Wyatt’s dedication, discipline and sportsmanship have made the entire Portersville Christian School community proud,” his coach, Bob Cross, said in a statement. “His success is a testament not only to his hard work and perseverance, but also to the growing strength of archery programs within our school and community.”
