Ben Roethlisberger questions Steelers' selection of Penn State QB Drew Allar
PITTSBURGH — Ben Roethlisberger, a lightly recruited high school quarterback who developed into a first-round pick, seems underwhelmed by the Steelers’ selection of Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, a five-star recruit who became a third-round selection.
Allar “never jumped off the page to me,” the retired Steelers quarterback says in the latest episode of his “Footbahlin” podcast.
“Third round? I mean, you can get a lot of good players in the third round,” Roethlisberger said.
Allar, like Roethlisberger, is a big-bodied quarterback with a strong arm. Both are 6-5. Allar comes out at 228 pounds, while Roethlisberger was 241.
“I think he had a lot of hype behind him at one point,” Roethlisberger said.
“Is he big? Can he move? Can he throw? Yeah. But there was never a time when I’m like, ‘Whoa.’ ”
Assuming Aaron Rodgers returns, Roethlisberger thinks Allar will compete with Will Howard for the No. 2 job, and the Steelers will part ways with Mason Rudolph.
Roethlisberger, who is firmly on the record as being a Howard fan, reiterated that stance in the context of the Allar pick.
“When I watch tape or if I watch games, Will Howard jumped off the tape to me way more than Drew did.”
The Steelers drafted Howard in the sixth round last year out of Ohio State.
Roethlisberger, who also knows a little something about offensive linemen after an 18-year NFL career behind center, also has questions about the Steelers’ first-round pick, tackle Max Iheanachor from Arizona State.
Most of Iheanachor’s limited experience comes at right tackle, but the Steelers seem to have a bigger need at left tackle with Broderick Jones’ health in doubt as he recovers from a neck injury.
“Where are they going to put him?” Roethlisberger said. “I assume you’re going to want him to play this year. I would hate for my first-round pick to be a project.”
